Prince Henry From Portugal Early 1400’s went into Atlantic Ocean Wanted to prove there was a way to reach Asia by ship

Henry the Navigator Navigation: the science of determining a ship’s sailing direction and location Scientists who were working for him made improvements in navigations Magnetic compass (invented by the Chinese) and the astrolabe

Caravel

Prince Henry’s Findings Henry’s caravels first sailed the coast of West Africa 1441: returned with gold dust 1445: Went to Cape Verde (western point of Africa) 1460: Prince Henry died and did not reach southern Africa

Bartolomeu Dias 1488: became first European to sail around the southern tip of Africa Named it “Cape of Storms” Later renamed “Cape of Good Hope”

Vasco da Gama Set out to India with four ships Went around Cape of Good Hope and stopped on the east coast of Africa Reached Calicut, India in 1498 First European to reach Asia by sea
