Objectives Examine focus in the context of entrepreneurial mindset Explore the impact of focus on success as an entrepreneur Assess your personal focus

Defining focus “a central point of attention or activity” Self-discipline Motivation Meticulousness

The benefits of focus Successful entrepreneurs are able to focus attention on a single task and see it through to completion Investing their attention, and processing information efficiently, enables entrepreneurs to be decisive and thoughtful in their decisions

Further thoughts on self-discipline Have a routine: to-do list Structure your day: time allotments –Done is better than perfect Push yourself: goal-oriented Write your goals: quantify and timeline Reward yourself: money, time, etc.

A primary task of leadership is to direct attention To do so, leaders must learn to focus their own attention –We commonly mean thinking about one thing while filtering out distractions We actually focus in many ways, for different purposes, drawing on different neural pathways Goleman, 2013

Leaders need to cultivate awareness 1.Inward focus 2.Focus on others 3.Outward focus –Improve ability to devise strategy, innovate, and manage organizations Cultivates emotional intelligence Goleman, 2013
