Module 5 – Circle 1 Character & Manners of a Muslim

Who is the best character to emulate? And indeed, you (Muhammad) are of a great moral character (68:4) The Prophet pbuh said: "I have only been sent to perfect good manners." Ahmad & Muwatta Maalik Module 5 – Circle 1 Abu Darda' reported that the Prophet of Allah, upon him be peace, said, "Nothing is heavier on the Scale of Deeds than one's good manners." Bukhari

Module 5 – Circle 1 What is the best way to greet a Muslim? “You will never enter Paradise until you become believers, and you will not become believers until you love each other. Shall I guide you to something that makes you love each other? Spread greetings with peace among you.” (Muslim)

What is the correct etiquette when sitting? “Never should anyone of you make someone rise from his place and sit in his place; rather, make more room for others to sit.” (Bukhari and Muslim) Module 5 – Circle 1 “If someone leaves his sitting place then returns to it, he will have more right to it”, as stated by the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.” (Muslim) Never separate two persons sitting: “It is not permissible for a man to separate two men (by inserting himself sitting between them) unless they give permission.” (Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi)

Module 5 – Circle 1 Talking when in a group “If there are three of you, never should two of you talk excluding the third until you mix with more people, as this would upset the third.” (Bukhari)

Module 5 – Circle 1 What should a Muslim do if he/she Sneezes? The Prophet pbuh said: “If one of you sneezes, let him say: Praise be to Allah! And his Muslim brother should say to him: May Allah have mercy on you! upon which he answers: May Allah guide you and make you well.” (Bukhari)

Module 5 – Circle 1 What should a Muslim do if he/she yawns? “Yawning is from satan, so when one of you yawns let him try to stop it as much as you can, for if one utters ‘Haa!’ (When yawning) the devil will laugh at him.” (Bukhari and Muslim) "When one of you yawns, he should keep his mouth covered with the help of his hand, for it is the devil that enters from there. (Muslim)

Module 5 – Circle 1 Belching/Burping According to Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him and his father, one man belched in the presence of Allah’s Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, upon which the Messenger said to him: “stop belching, The biggest eaters in this worldly life will be the hungriest in the Hereafter.” (Tirmidhi)

Module 5 – Circle 1 Eating Narrated By 'Umar bin Abi Salama: I was a boy under the care of Allah's Messenger pbuh and my hand used to go around the dish while I was eating. So the Messenger pbuh said to me, 'O boy! Mention the Name of Allah and eat with your right hand, and eat of the dish what is nearer to you." Since then I have applied those instructions when eating. (Bukhari) Narrated By Umayyah Ibn Makhshi: Umayyah was sitting and a man was eating. He did not mention Allah's name until there remained the last mouthful. When he raised it to his mouth, he said: “In the name of Allah at the beginning and at the end of it.” The Prophet pbuh laughed and said: “The devil kept eating along with him, but when he mentioned Allah's name, he vomited what was in his belly.” (Abu Dawud)

Module 5 – Circle 1 Eating Narrated By Abu Umamah: Whenever the dining sheet of the Prophet was taken away (i.e., whenever he finished his meal), he used to say: "Al-Hamdu lillah kathiran taiyiban mubarakan fihi ghaira makfiy wala muwada' wala mustaghna'anhu Rabbuna." (Bukhari) Anas b. Malik reported that: there was brought to Allah's Messenger pbuh a cup of milk mixed with water, while there was on his right side a desert Arab and on his left side Abu Bakr. He (the Prophet pbuh) drank; he then gave it to the desert Arab and said: (Give to one) who is on the right, then again who is on the right. (Muslim)

Module 5 – Circle 1 Travelling “When three people set out on a journey they should appoint one of them as their leader.´ (Abu Dawud) While riding a horse or boarding a mode of transport, one should recite: BISMILLAH (in the name of ALLAH) and after having taken ones seat one should make the following dua: Praise is to Allah. Glory is to Him Who has provided this for us, though we could never have had it by our own efforts. Surely, unto our Lord we are returning.

Module 5 – Circle 1 Modesty & Showing Off The Prophet pbuh said: ‘Modesty brings nothing but good.’ (Bukhari) The Prophet pbuh also said: “Modesty is part of faith, and faith leads to heaven; while indecency is part of unfaith, and unfaith leads to hell.” (Bukhari) Abu Hurayra (ra) reported that the Messenger of Allah pbuh said, "Anyone who learns knowledge which should be learned for the sake of Allah swt only to obtain goods of this world by it, will not experience the scent of the Paradise on the Last Day." [Abu Dawud]

Module 5 – Circle 1 Vain Talk & Swearing Narrated Abdullah bin Amr: "The Prophet said, "Whoever has the following four (characteristics) will be a pure hypocrite and whoever has one of the following four characteristics will have one characteristic of hypocrisy unless and until he gives it up. 1. Whenever he is entrusted, he betrays. 2. Whenever he speaks, he tells a lie. 3. Whenever he makes a covenant, he proves treacherous. 4. Whenever he quarrels, he behaves in a very unwise, evil and insulting manner." (Bukhari)

Module 5 – Circle 1 Lying ‘Abdullah Bin Mas’ud narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “It is obligatory for you to tell the truth, for truth leads to virtue and virtue leads to Paradise…and beware of telling of a lie for telling of a lie leads to obscenity and obscenity leads to Hell-Fire...” (Bukhari and Muslim) The Prophet pbuh said, "Whoever does not give up false statements (i.e. telling lies), and evil deeds, and speaking bad words to others, Allah is not in need of his (fasting) leaving his food and drink" (Bukhari).

Module 5 – Circle 1 Anger and patience "Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger pbuh as saying: The strong-man is not one who wrestles well but the strong man is one who controls himself when he is in a fit of rage. (Muslim)

Module 5 – Circle 1 Promises “O you who believe! Fulfill (your) obligations” [5:1] The Prophet said: "Three traits single out a hypocrite, even if he prays or fasts and claims to be Muslim: If he speaks, he lies. If he makes a promise, he does not keep it. If he is entrusted, he betrays the trust." [Bukhari and Muslim]

Module 5 – Circle 1 Opening doors for others, and giving others way The Prophet pbuh said: "When you carry out an mercy to those on Earth, He Who is in Jannah will engulf you with His Mercy”. (Bukhari and Muslim)

Module 5 – Circle 1 Neighbours “Gabriel (as) continued to recommend the treating of neighbours kindly and politely, so much so that I thought he would order me to make them my inheritors.” [Bukhari]. Once, the Prophet pbuh said "By Allah, he does not believe! By Allah, he does not believe! By Allah, he does not believe!" It was said, "Who is that, O Allah's Apostle?" He said, "That person whose neighbour does not feel safe from his evil." [Bukhari]

Module 5 – Circle 1 Dealing Kindly & Justly with Non- Muslims "Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly”. (60:8) Narrated Jarir bin Abdullah (ra): "Allah's Messenger pbuh said, 'Allah will not be merciful to those who are not merciful to mankind.' (Bukhari)

Module 5 – Circle 1 Respect for the property of others O you who have believed, do not enter houses other than your own houses until you ascertain welcome and greet their inhabitants. And if you do not find anyone therein, do not enter them until permission has been given you. And if it is said to you, "Go back," then go back; it is purer for you. And Allah is Knowing of what you do " (24:27-28)

Module 5 – Circle 1 Addressing each other and making fun of others "O ye who believe! Let not some men among you laugh at others: It may be that the (latter) are better than the (former): Nor let some women laugh at others: It may be that the (latter are better than the (former): Nor defame nor be sarcastic to each other, nor call each other by (offensive) nicknames: Ill-seeming is a name connoting wickedness, (to be used of one) after he has believed: And those who do not desist are (indeed) doing wrong.” ( 49:11)

Module 5 – Circle 1 People who are loved by Allah swt Narrated Abu Huraira: "Allah's Apostle said, 'If Allah loves a person, He calls Gabriel, saying, 'Allah loves so and so, O Gabriel love him' So Gabriel would love him and then would make an announcement in the Heavens: 'Allah has loved so and-so therefore you should love him also.' So all the dwellers of the Heavens would love him, and then he is granted the pleasure of the people on the earth.' (Bukhari)

Module 5 – Circle 1 What is the best way to depart from another Muslim? “If one comes to a meeting he should say: Assalamu Alaykum! (I.e. Peace be upon you!) And on leaving he should do the same, for the first greeting is not more important than latter.” (Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi)

Module 5 – Circle 1 We are Ambassadors for Islam Do not turn people away (Muslims and Non- Muslims) from Islam by bad character and manners, as this may work against you on the Day of Judgement. Bring people closer to Allah swt by your good character and good manners for extra reward on the Last Day.
