THE BEGINNING… NEW JERSEY WAS WON BY THE ENGLISH FROM THE DUTCH IN THE FIRST PERSON THE STEP FOOT ON JERSEY LAND WAS HENRY HUDSON, WHO NOW HAS A RIVER THAT BARES HIS NAME. IN 1664, THE DUKE OF YORK ASSIGNED LORD BERKELEY AND SIR GEORGE CARTERET THE LAND. SOME OF THE FIRST PEOPLE TO HAVE INHABITED NEW JERSEY WERE FROM DELAWARE. THESE PEOPLE WERE CALLED THE LENNI LENAPE PEOPLE. THERE WERE THREE MAIN TRIBES: THE UNAMI(LENAPE) TRIBE, THE MINISINK(MUNSEE) TRIBE, AND THE UNALACHTIGO TRIBE. THE TAINO TRIBE ALSO MIGRATED TO NEW JERSEY AFTER THE EUROPEANS ARRIVED, BUT MOST OF THE NATIVE AMERICANS WERE FORCED TO LEAVE NEW JERSEY, WHEN EASTERN TRIBES WERE BEING DISPLACED BY COLONIAL EXPANSION.
