What are the parts of the brain? Lesson 21 What are the parts of the brain?

The brain is the control center of your body The brain is the control center of your body. The brain is made up of a mass of nervous tissue. It is protected by your skull.

The main job of the brain is to receive messages and decide what to do. These messages may come from inside or outside your body.

Your brain responds to the messages and then controls almost all of your body’s activities.

The brain is made up of three main parts. Different parts of the brain control different activities.

Cerebrum - Largest part of the brain - Controls senses, thought, memory and learning - Controls certain voluntary muscles, such as walking, talking and writing.

Cerebellum - Located in the back of the brain - Works with the cerebrum to control voluntary muscles - Controls body movements - Helps you keep your balance

Medulla - The smallest part of the brain - Is a thick stalk located at the base of the skull - Connects the brain to the spinal cord

- Controls vital involuntary functions, such as breathing, digestion, heartbeat, sneezing, and blinking
