1 Bell Ringer/Do Now-11-07-18 What is the job of the Nervous System?
Tell me one problem of the Nervous system.

2 Mrs. Hill Nervous System

3 The Nervous System Your body’s control center.
It regulates all of your body functions and activities.

4 The Nervous System- is composed of your Brain, Spinal Cord, Nerves, and Sensory Organs.
(eyes, ears, and taste buds of the tongue)

5 Function Controls voluntary activities- such as walking and talking, and controls involuntary activities such as heart beat and digestion It also allows you to: see, hear, smell, taste, and detect pain and pressure

6 How it Works The nervous system works by sending electrical messages called nerve impulses to and from various parts of the body.

7 Parts of The Nervous System
The Brain- a mass of nervous tissue located inside the skull. There are three main parts of the brain and they all work together.

8 1. The Cerebrum- The largest and most complex part of the brain.
- coordinates the body systems - controls the senses; taste, smell, touch, sight, and hearing -also controls; emotions, voluntary muscle movement -consciousness -learning and memory

9 2. The Cerebellum- the second largest part
-controls coordination, balance and posture 3. The Brainstem- connects to the spinal cord (the base of the brain) -controls life support functions; heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing

10 The Central Nervous System
(CNS) includes the brain and the spinal cord

11 The Spinal Cord- is a bundle of nervous tissue about one and a half feet long, protected by our backbone or spine Function of the Spinal Cord- relay impulses between the brain and the parts of the body

12 Sensory neurons- carry messages to the brain
Two types of neurons Sensory neurons- carry messages to the brain Motor neurons- carry responses to the muscles. (actions)

13 Nerve damage is usually permanent.
If a nerve is damaged or destroyed it cannot be replaced.
