Lewis & Clark’s Adventures Directions: On February 28, 1803, President Thomas Jefferson got approval from Congress to send Meriwether Lewis, William Clark, and a team of 31 others to explore the American West. Learn all about their adventures right here!!

In 1803, myths defined the uncharted West. The Lewis and Clark expedition later dispelled the existence of a “northwest passage.” What did they think the Northwest Passage was? What did Jefferson hope this passage would bring?

Lewis and Clark’s crew, called the Corps of _________ differed in background, rank and experience. Who was the youngest? Age? Who was Seaman? Who was York?

Lewis spent his time accumulating all the supplies that the expedition was going to need. He wrote list after list of provisions, which included guns, ammunition, medical supplies and scientific instruments. How much money did Congress allow for the expedition? Name 5 of the many gifts given to the Native Americans.

The Corps of Discovery would come into contact with nearly 50 Native American tribes. Describe the life of the Mandans. Describe the life the Teton Sioux.

Lewis and Clark developed a ritual that they used when meeting a tribe for the first time. The captains would explain to the tribal leaders that their land now belonged to the United States, and that a man far in the east – President Thomas Jefferson – was their new “great father.” Describe what they would give the Indians when they spoke to them about President Jefferson. And then what they would do?

Along the journey, Lewis and Clark saw many new plants and animals such as the black-tailed prairie dog. What did they nickname it? What did they do with one? How long did it take? Describe its journey.

A key member of the group was Sacagawea, who served as an interpreter. Name one other reason why she was so key to the expedition. What are some theories of what happened to Sacagawea?

It is U.S. President Thomas Jefferson has asked Meriwether Lewis to lead an expedition across western North America—unknown territory for all but Indians. What were some of the expeditions goals ?

The Corps finally reached the Pacific Ocean in November, Navigate through this site to find the names of the states that Lewis and Clark’s expedition crossed through. Name 5 states that they pass through on the way.
