Indirect Object

The indirect object is the noun or pronoun that is located between the action verb and the direct object and that is indirectly affected by the action. S-AVP-IO-DO We gave him the business.

Find the indirect object by asking: Subject + Verb + DO + to whom/for whom? We gave him the business. Ask, “We gave business to whom/for whom?” Answer: for him Him is the indirect object

Hamlet gave Polonius a sardonic interrogation. subj. AVP D.O.I.O.

Not all sentences with a direct object will have an indirect object. For example: He threw the ball. He threw ball to whom/for whom? An indirect object isn’t present.
