Blood disorders and Hematstasis

Anemia  what is it?

Anemia Decrease in oxygen carrying ability

3 Causes:

Examples of causes 1. Low RBC: bleeding, RBC’s are destroyed (bacterial infection) 2. Low hemoglobin: low iron in diet; slow, prolonged bleeding 3. Abnormal hemoglobin: sickle cell anemia

Symptoms:

Symptoms: 1. Fatigue 2. Tachycardia 3. Feeling cold 4. Dizziness or fainting

Sickle cell anemia

Sickle Cell: Who carries the trait?

Sickle Cell: Who carries the trait? (don’t write) Prevalent in African Americans: 1 in 12 carries the trait 70,000-80,000 Americans have sickle cell anemia

Why this group?

Malaria Range in World

Malarial range in Africa

How does trait work? genetics

How does trait work: genetics (write) If have 2 genes for SCA: have disease If have 1 gene for SCA: ½ of RBC’s are sickle shaped, you won’t get malaria

Symptoms of SCA Pain Anemia

Hemophilia “free bleeder” Blood can’t clot Bruise easy Life threatening

Leukemia Too many White blood cells made They don’t work well Crowd out normal cells
