Review - Anemias/WBCs

Hemolytic Anemia Arrows indicate cells being destroyed; Acquired (thru certain chemicals) or inherited RBCs are destroyed before They mature. Fatigue, dizziness, pain in Abdomen and limbs.

Pernicious Anemia Pernicious anemia is caused by a lack of intrinsic factor Intrinsic factor is a protein made in the stomach. It helps your body absorb vitamin B12, necessary for normal RBC production; RBCs are larger & form chains Same symptoms as other anemias, can also lead to neurological and digestive issues.

Aplastic Anemia Aplastic anemia develops when damage occurs to your bone marrow, slowing or shutting down the production of healthy RBCs. Hematopoietic stem cells stop producing. May be from radiation, toxic chemicals or certain drugs Fatigue, shortness of breath, weakness

Thalassemia Reduced hemoglobin and fewer red blood cells than normal. The genes that code for hemoglobin are missing or mutated. Cause incorrect structure of globin molecules. Severity of symptoms Correspond to type of Thalassemia.

Polycythemia The overproduction of red blood cells; may be 6 to 9 million erythrocytes per cubic millimeter of blood. Mostly genetic factors Little symptoms but Can be indicator of other blood disorders. Weakness, fatigue headache

Sickle Cell anemia Hereditary Misshapen RBCs Normal anemia Symptoms with pain.

Caused by excessive blood loss or issues absorbing iron. Fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath
