Unit 6 Math Vocab By: Marshall Lockyer

Constant Term A constant term is a term in an equation that does not change Example: a = 6 + b : In this case, 6 is a constant Example: 2x + 3y + 7 : constant = 7

Division of fractions property If you divide a number by a fraction, it is the same as multiplying it by its reciprocal Example: 5 divided by 1/3 is the same as 5 multiplied by 3 Example: 10 divided by ½ is the same as 10 multiplied by 2

Equation an equation is a mathematical expression. Example one: a = 5*b + c Example two: t = d*2 + 4

Equivalent equations An equivalent equations is when two equations have the same answer. A+B= B+A C*D= D*C

integers Any number that does not contain a fraction, or a decimal place. Examples : 2,3,4,7, 11, 256, 67890,

Inequality Inequality means not equal to. Example: 5+2 does not equal 3 Example: 10*2 ≠ 5

Multiplication property of -1 If you multiply any number by -1 you will always get the opposite of that number. Example: 5 * -1 = -5 Example -4 * -1 = 4

Nested parentheses Nested Parentheses are parentheses inside other parentheses. Example: ( (3+2) * (4+5) ) Example: ((7+6) / 4) + 6

Open sentence An open sentence is an equation that contains one or more variables. Example: a = 6b + c Example: x= y + 4z

Opposite of a number If a number is a positive number than its opposite would be the same number, but it would be a negative number, and vice versa Example: a positive 4’s opposite number is -4 Example: a negative 6’s opposite is 6.

Order of operations Order of operations is what you do first to solve a problem. The first one is parentheses, then multiplication, then division, then addition, then subtraction. Example one: a = * 4: multiply 6*4 before adding Example two: x= (11+8) – 7: Add 11+8 first as they are in parenthesis

Reciprocal A reciprocal of a number is 1 divided by the number. Example: reciprocal of 2 is ½ Example: reciprocal of is 1/21345

Relation symbol How does one side of the equation relate to the other side using a symbol to show the relation. Examples: =,, >=

Repeating decimals Decimals that repeat forever!!! Examples: 1/3 = which repeats for ever Example

Solution A solution is the answer to a problem or an equation. Example : a = 5* Solution a=37 Example: x= 21/3 -4. Solution x=3

Solution set Solution set is all of the possible solutions to a problem. Example a 2 = 81. Solution set: – a=9 – a=-9 Example: 15 = 3 a + b. Solution set: – a=5, b=0 – a=4, b=3 – a=3, b=6 – a=2, b=9 – a=1, b=12 – a=0, b=15

Terminating decimals Terminating decimals are decimals that end, or don’t go on for ever. Examples: 1.234, 2.1,

Trial and error method The trial and error method is like guess and check. Example: 81= 9*?. Try and get 90, so try 9 and that equals 81 so that is correct Example: 64 = 8 * ?. Try 7, 8*7=56, so try 8. 8*8=64, correct

Variable A variable is a letter that is represented as a number in a number sentence Example one: 4+4=A Example two: 5+5=x
