End of the Revolution

War in the South After Patriot successes at the Battle of Saratoga, the British decided to focus on the southern states because of the strong Loyalist support there. In 1778 General Henry Clinton captured Savannah, Georgia from the British. In 1780 he captured Charles Town before giving command of the British Army to General Charles Cornwallis. Guerilla warfare in South Carolina eventually created a lot of problems for the British. “The Swamp Fox” Francis Marion was a notorious Patriot leader.

American Victory The British left South Carolina late in 1780 to advance north toward Virginia. Americans won key victories at Kings Mountain and Cowpens. French aid arrived in In 1781 Washington sent General Lafayette to help with the attack on Cornwallis. On October 19, 1781, surrounded with the French Navy cutting off their escape General Cornwallis surrendered his 8,000 troops to Washington.

Independence Following Yorktown the British realized they had to surrender. The Treaty of Parisb 1783 was negotiated by Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and John Jay and was signed on September 3, 1783.

Treaty of Paris, 1783 Britain recognized America as an independent nation. British promised to withdraw troops from American territory. Granted fishing rights to Americans off the coast of Canada. Americans would pay British merchants what they owed.
