Multimedia Systems Lecture 1: Introduction Prof. Charlene Tsai

Requirements 10% class participation 20% 4 Homeworks 25% term project 20% midterm 25% final exam

Course Materials Prescribed textbook:  “Fundamentals of Multimedia” by Ze-Nian Li and Mark S. Drew (Highly recommended by Prof. Chang) Other references:  Multimedia Communications: “Applications, Networks, Protocols and Standards” by Fred Halsall  Rafael C. Gonzalez, Richard E. Woods: Digital Image Processing. Prentice Hall; 2nd edition, 2002 Lecture notes will be available online

Course Materials We’ll cover most of the fundamental concepts using the book by Li& Drew Extra materials are included from other two reference books Toward the end of the course (last month), students are expected to present topics in more depth as part of the final project.

Lecture Format Learning should not be passive, but active I highly encourage students’ participation The more active you are in class discussion, the higher your score for class participation.
