Functional Text: Directions I can interpret details of a functional text. Created by: Rachel Tankersley Sycamore Elementary School Vail School District

Essential Questions: What is a functional text? How do I use details from informational texts for a specific purpose? How do we locate information within a functional text?

How to read directions? Look at the starting and end points. Look at the question to see what you are looking for. Draw out the route you are going to take.

Let’s try one: How many miles do you travel on Houghton? What direction do you turn onto Harrison? How many miles do you drive in step 4? How many total miles will you drive?

Another one to try: What direction do you go on Rita Rd.? What is the total distance traveled? Directions from Fry’s to Walgreens 1. Take a right on to West Rita Rd. 1.7 mi 2. Take a right at North Nexus Rd. 0.2 mi 3. Turn right at Walgreens 244 ft. Total distance: 10,276 feet or 1.95 miles

More Practice : ) How many miles do you travel on Rita Rd? What direction do you turn onto Cam Del Toro? How many feet do you drive in step 2? How many total miles will you drive? How long will the trip take? What is the final destination address?

Follow Up: Now it is your turn to write out the directions! Starting from your desk, write how you would get to the library. Be very descriptive, because we will be testing your directions.
