1 Chapter 5 Section 1 Motion

2 Motion Reference point – a point used to compare the distance of an object to Motion – when an object changes its position from a reference point Position – measure of length away from a reference point Distance – measure of length traveled along a path from a reference point

3 Speed Speed – rate at which an object changes its distance distance
time

4 Units miles per hour SI Units

5 Velocity Velocity – speed + direction Sign indicates direction
on a graph: - negative = towards reference point + positive = away from reference point

6 in real life: - negative = + positive = south, west, down, left
north, east, up, right

7 Resultant Velocity Resultant velocity – total velocity of an object moving within another moving object. 1) Change directions to positive and negative signs 2) Plug numbers into equation 3) Change sign back to direction

8 Acceleration acceleration – rate at which an object changes its velocity. final velocity initial velocity acceleration time

9 Units miles per hour per second SI Units meters per second per second
=
