M Y S EASHORE P RESENTATION ! By: Megan Weigold

T HE L ARGEST S EA TURTLE ! The Leatherback is the largest of all sea turtles. They usually weigh 1,404 lbs. and are usually 6 ft. The largest Sea Turtle ever found was in 1988 and was 2,016 lbs. It died because it got tangled in a fishermen's net.

T HE C ONCH S HELL AND WHY YOU HEAR THE OCEAN. The Conch Shell has a hallow shell. When something is hallow, it has an echo. So, when the air goes in and out of the shell, you hear the air going into the spiral, then coming back out making an echo. That makes it sound like an ocean.

T HE LARGEST CORAL REEF ! o The Great Barrier Reef is the largest reef. o It stretches for,260 miles on the coast of Queensland in Australia. o It is twice as big as Iceland.

T IDES /W AVES In Fundy, Canada, waves can get up to 49 ft. The tallest wave ever was in 1993 & was 112 ft. tall. It was in the Pacific Ocean.

F ISH (D AY 2 S TRATEGY ) You have probably predicted that there are a lot of fish in the world. And that there are still a lot of undiscovered fish. But just to let you know we have about 14,000 species of fish that we know of. And that there are 3 categories of fish. The primitive jawless fishes, the cartilaginous (shark like) fishes, and the bony fishes.

F ISH (P ART 2) Another thing you probably predicted is that fish never sleep but actually they do! They can’t close there eyes. And sometimes they don’t even stop moving. But they do have periods when they rest but they stay semi-alert.

C ONNECTION T IME ! (D AY 3 S TRATEGY ) Experts perdict there will be flooding in Water may go up 19.5 inches. There may also be coastal erosion. In Social Studies we learned that Mesopotamia had a yearly flood. They never knew when it was coming though. In this text…That is like…

I N WITH THE OLD, OUT WITH THE NEW STRATEGY. (D AY 4 S TRATEGY ) You probably knew that Sea stars are flexible and can wrap around things. Why are Sea stars so flexible? Here is the answer! Sea stars are not that spiny They are protected by an ex-skeleton which is just an outer-skeleton. Their flexibility allows them to capture and handle prey easier. Old Knowledge and Question. New Knowledge

FOUR QUADRANTS (D AY 5 S TRATEGY ) Important points: Sharks are dangerous but so are many other animals. Other animals that you should stay away from are, barracudas, moray eels, sharp spined sea urchins, octopuses, stingrays, toadfish, catfish, and jellyfish. How does this information match what I already knew? I knew that you should probably stay away from sharks because they can hurt or kill you.

FOUR QUADRANTS (P ART 2) (D AY 5 S TRATEGY ) Why should you learn this? What is important about learning this? You should learn this because you can be safe when you go swimming in a beach or ocean. It is very important to be safe. “Better safe than sorry” What questions do you still have about the topic? What should you do if you come in contact with these animals?

Digging for Meaning. (Day 6 Strategy) Above-ground facts: Seals swim fast and can swim fast. Most of the time they are in the water. Below-ground interpretations: Seals can swim up to 12 mph, we can only swim under 1 mph. Seals can be underwater for 30 minutes but usually come up every 5 minutes.

The Moon, Waves, and the Tides. Waves are caused by the winds. They are influenced by the tides. Tides are caused by a gravitational force of the moon. The Moon attracts water. The bigger the moon, the higher the tides are.

Tentacles and Stinging Animals that have tentacles and sting are jellyfish, anemones, and corals. They all look harmless. If you get close enough, they will poison you.

Which plant do we have the most of on a seashore? We have the most of seaweed which is also known as algae. There are 3 kinds or seaweed, green, brown, and red. Seaweed doesn’t usually have roots, stems, or leaves. Sometimes bigger seaweed have roots, stems, or leaves.
