Florida! My Home State By: Mrs. Davis

Lesson Plan Grade 2 nd Grade – Social Studies Objectives The student will be able to use maps and globes, locate the student's hometown, Florida, and North America, and locate the state capital. (SS.2.G.1.2) The student develops the essential technology skills for using and understanding conventional and current tools, materials and processes. (LA.2.6.4) The student will use appropriate available technologies to enhance communication and achieve a purpose (e.g., video, presentations) (LA ).

Goal Students will gain the understanding of how to locate the state of Florida using maps and globes. They will also learn how Florida is apart of the United States and the continent of North America. Students will create a flyer persuading tourist that Florida is a great place to visit. Materials SmartBoard desktop computers with internet access Microsoft Publisher / Word Social Studies textbook

Day 1 – Prior Knowledge 1.What is the name of our state? 2.What is the name of our city? 3.What is the capital of our state?

Whole Group / Group Discussion Read the insert from the Social Studies textbook, “Where is Florida?” Ask questions based on the insert “Where is Florida?” that will lead to students’ understanding of Florida’s geographic location. 1.On which continent is Florida located on? 2.Is Florida located above or below the equator? 3.In which hemisphere can Florida be located?

Day 2 – Technology Training Using the SmartBoard, demonstrate how to use different search engines when using the internet. How to create a flyer using Microsoft Publisher. How to create a list of sources using Microsoft Word. How to import pictures / graphics.

Days 3-6 – Group Project Work in groups of four on the project, Facts About Florida. Create a flyer that persuades tourists from all around the world that Florida is a great place to visit. The flyer must have the following components: 1.Heading (The title of the project) 2.Florida’s Nickname 3.The capital of Florida 4.Where is Florida located (include the hemisphere, continent, and country)

Days 3-6 – Group Project (cont.) 5. Florida’s Motto 6. Name four major cities to visit and their main attraction. (Ex: Orlando, Florida—Disney World) 7. Include pictures / graphics 8. List of sources (presented in Microsoft Word)
