Small Bodies in the Solar System- pg. 79 Why do you think meteors and asteroids are so dangerous to the Earth? Observation: DAWN 2.html

COMETS? What are COMETS? A body of ice, rock and cosmic dust loosely packed together. “Dirty Snowballs”

Why do comets have “tails”? A comet’s tail always points away from the sun (blown by the solar wind)

Comet’s Orbit

What are ASTEROIDS ? Small, rocky bodies that revolve around the sun Most are in the asteroid belt

What is the largest asteroid? Ceres –914 km across914 km

What are meteoroids? Meteoroid – a small, rocky body that revolves around the sun. –think: mini “Asteroid”

What is a Meteor? Meteor – the bright streak of light –“Shooting Stars” –think: “Meteor Shower”

What are Meteorites? Meteorite – A meteoroid that strikes the ground. –think: Can hold it “rite” in your hand!

Meteor Crater- AZ Near Flagstaff 1200 m across formed about 50,000 years ago

Let’s Make a Flow Map!

Meteoroids in Orbit

Comet’s Orbit

What is The Torino Scale ? A system to rate the hazard level of an object moving toward Earth Scale from 0 to 10 and color coded RED is bad news
