Paraphrasing (summarising)

Why? Group question: What is paraphrasing? In pairs, discuss: Why and when is it useful to paraphrase?

Understanding What, When, Where, Who and How questions can help with understanding. Paraphrasing statements can confirm your understanding.

Paraphrasing Example Question “If I’m facilitating a group of adults that I normally tell ‘how and what’ to do and they respond well to that, are you now saying I should stop telling them what to do?” Paraphrasing question “So, you are asking if I am saying to stop using a ‘telling’ approach?”

Activity 1.One person talks about something they can comfortably talk about in detail for at least 2min (e.g., what they did last weekend) 2.After 2min, someone else then takes about 15 seconds to paraphrase what the other person said 3.Make sure everyone has s chance to paraphrase someone else

Woody Allen Talks Paraphrasing “He told me to go forth and multiply, but not in those words”

Quiet time

Reflection Take a couple of minutes to write down what paraphrasing means for you in the context of your work.
