How to calculate Density 6 th Grade

Let’s first look at the formula Remember that d is for density, m is for mass and v is for volume.

Now, lets look at the triangle

Units are clues to help you determine what is mass, volume and density Units for MassUnits for VolumeUnits for Density gmLg/mL kgcm 3 g/cm 3 mgLKg/L

Volume of regular figures To find the volume of a regular figure you must use this formula: V = l x w x h V= 4m x 3m x 1m V= 12m 3

What is water displacement? Water displacement is used to find the VOLUME of an irregular figure using a GRADUATED CYLINDER. Irregular figure

Water Displacement

Let’s take a look at the math and setting up density If: Mass= 12 g Volume= 6 mL Density= ? D= 12g 6mL Remember mass always goes on top

Remember how to divide without a calculator: D= 12g 6mL 12 6 Remember this little clue to help you figure out what to put inside and outside “cowboy and the horse” the cowboy goes in the house and the horse stays outside the house.

Density= 2 g/mL

Now you try it: don’t forget to include your units 3) Mass= 80 g Volume= 8 mL Density= ? 4) Mass= 28 g Volume= 4 cm 3 Density= ? 1) Mass= 45 g Volume= 8 cm 3 Density= ? 2) Mass= 54 g Volume= 9 mL Density= ?

Now that you are familiar with the triangle, use it to find the following: 1) Mass= 45 g Volume= ? Density= 5 g/mL 2) Mass= ? Volume= 4 cm 3 Density= 9g/cm 3 3) Mass= 50 g Volume= ? Density= 10 g/mL 4) Mass= ? Volume= 3 cm 3 Density= 7 g/cm 3

Now, lets look at a word problem: A rock has a mass of 65g and a volume of 5mL. What is its density?

Now lets identify the mass and volume A rock has a mass of 65g and a volume of 5mL. What is its density? VolumeMass D= 65g 5mL 65 5

Density= 13 g/mL

Now, lets see how well you know this: 1)A mineral sample has a mass of 63 g and a volume of 9 mL. What is the density? 2)A graduated cylinder was filled to 20 mL. A rock with a mass of 80g was dropped and rose the water to 60 mL. What is the density? 3)What is the volume of a box that has a length of 5 cm, width of 2 cm and a height of 3 cm? 4)What is the density of the box in #3 if the mass is 90 g?
