1 Density

2 What is density? Density is the amount of mass per unit volume of a material Matter is made of particles (atoms or molecules) that have mass. The density of a material depends on the masses and the number of particles packed into a given volume.

3 Calculating density D=density, units are g/cm3 or g/mL
m = mass, units are in g v = volume, units are in cm3 or mL

4

5 Solving for volume Solving for volume
Irregular objects can be solved using a graduated cylinder and water Regular objects can be used by measuring and formulas

6 Density and materials Density does not change for an object, even if it’s volume and mass changes Densities of some common materials Water is always 1g/mL

7 What does density depend on?
Mass of particles More mass, greater density Distance between particles Greater the distance between the atoms/molecules, the smaller the density Density of a gas is usually much less than the density of a solid or liquid
