Persepolis The purpose of today’s lesson is to gain more background knowledge of the events surrounding the Iranian Revolution in 1979 and to gain an understanding of graphic novel terms and how they are used in a graphic novel.

Panel Each individual picture

Frame The lines that border the panel

Gutters The space between the panels

Bleed When the image extends to or beyond the edge of the page

Foreground The image closest to the viewer

Midground Where your eye falls first

Background Provides additional context such as setting

Graphic Weight The use of light or dark images that make a panel appear heavier or lighter

Captions Boxes that contain a variety of text elements including things such as setting and background

Speech bubbles Dialogue
