2 Flashback Looking back on events that occur before the narrative
Writers use flashback to insert past events, in order to provide background or context to the current events of a narrative Flashbacks allow their readers to gain insight into a character’s motivations, and provide a background to a current conflict Dream sequences and memories are methods used to present flashbacks.

3 Marjane Satrapi ( ) An Iranian-born French graphic novelist, cartoonist, illustrator, film director, and children's book author. Both her parents were politically active and supported Marxist causes against the monarchy of the last Shah. She witnessed many family friends being persecuted, arrested, and even murdered.  She was a strong-willed teenager that was passionate about her beliefs. Apart from her native language Persian, she speaks French, English, Swedish, German, and Italian.

4 Persepolis Insight Depicts her childhood up to her early adult years in Iran during and after the Islamic revolution. Originally published in French, it has been translated into several languages including English. Newsweek ranked the book #5 on its list of the ten best non-fiction books of the decade. When looking at the main character of Persepolis, we see the daily struggle that she goes through- whether as a result of her religion, culture, gender, or a mixture of the three issues. Looking at Persepolis, we will be able to see from her perspective, the struggles she went through, what influenced her decisions, and even how she overcame her struggles.
