Thesis I plan to discuss the main points and causes of the American Civil War.

Causes Abraham Lincoln was elected as President This upset the southern states because Lincoln was against slavery in new states His election caused 7 southern states to succeed from the union before he even came into office

Hostilities Begin April 12, 1861 Confederate troops attacked a military base in Fort Sumter in South Carolina Lincoln called for a volunteer army to assemble Union got control over the boarder states and tried issuing a blockade

Emancipation Proclamation issued by Lincoln in an attempt to weaken the south It freed all slaves in the southern states that succeeded Many of the freed slaves joined the union forces After the war ended Lincoln declared all slaves to be free
