Here’s why Mike decided to Flip…

1.What is Flipping? That which is traditionally done in class is now done at home, and that which is traditionally done as homework is now completed in class. Sams and Bergmann (2012)

1. What is Flipping? Flipping your class involves changing the structure of the traditional class – What was homework, is done in class – What was done in class, (eg. Lectures) is now homework Creating Videos? Interactive slide shows too!

Types of Flipping 1.Full course 2.Partial course – once in a while 3.External source flip (eg. Using Kahn Academy to teach math)

2. How do you actually Flip? You need to set up your class for Flipping – Videos Teacher Voice only Teacher Voice and video Ideally it should be your own videos – students relate better – Student access to videos Eg. YouTube channel, internal link like pick-up folders – Rules/tips for the watching of videos Student motivation

3. Introduction to Screencasting Screencasting involves using software to video-capture what is on your computer screen, including any associated sound (with a microphone) Screencasting software – Screencast-O-Matic – Camtasia – Others? (30+ on Wikipedia!)

4. Follow-up with Students Students must buy in Beginning of class – take up questions, probe for further clarification Check if the work is done (formative assessment!)

Benefits & Challenges Benefits – makes students more responsible for their learning (empowerment) – allows teachers to be available to help when students are working through problems – further engage students in the tech culture they’re immersed – parents can be on top of what students are learning (opens up your classroom to the greater community)

Benefits & Challenges Benefits – Lesson delivery actually happens quicker! – Great for applied/experiential learning – focus on applied learning in class (after watching the theory for homework) – Differentiated Instruction – students can watch multiple times, jump ahead – it’s up to them! – Students can binge watch lessons, to review for a test/exam!

6. Benefits & Challenges Challenges – It’s not easy for some students, who aren’t comfortable with technology – Still lecturing, just a different format! – Takes a lot of time to create videos – Implementation – there may be resistance to change! – Assumes all students have access to Internet/computers at home. Not all do, so have a back-up plan.
