DESIGNING AND IMPLEMENTING A COLLABORATORY FOR STEM EDUCATION MICHAEL LAFRENIERE OHIO UNIVERSITY-CHILLICOTHE LAFRENIE@OHIO.EDU RODNEY HANDY PURDUE UNIVERSITY RHANDY@PURDUE.EDU October 3, 2011 2011 STEMTECH CONFERENCE 1

OVERVIEW This presentation will focus on using Tablet PC technology to improve STEM instruction. Collaborative networking of Tablet PCs enables the instructor and students to use software that facilitates participation so that formative and summative assessment can be effectively and efficiently used. October 3, 2011 2011 STEMTECH CONFERENCE 2

OVERVIEW ( continued ) Major Advantages of a Collaboratory  an ability to exchange student work in an asynchronous manner  an allowance for students to play back synchronized audio and writings of a course lecture,  an allowance for students to annotate and add private notes, and  an ability for group work to occur that can be submitted via the management system and returned to each group member. October 3, 2011 2011 STEMTECH CONFERENCE 3

OVERVIEW ( continued ) Phases of STEM instruction addressed  Preparation techniques,  in-class instruction,  supplemental instruction, and  online tutoring Demonstration using tablet PCs and collaborative software included. October 3, 2011 2011 STEMTECH CONFERENCE 4

INITIAL INTEREST To share notes with students To increase student engagement To increase student participation With regard to problems (Polya)  To understand problems  Develop a plan to solve them  Carry out the plan  Look back and review Source: Rapid City, SD (circa 2011) October 3, 2011 2011 STEMTECH CONFERENCE 5

TODAY Create A Collaboratory  Where each student in the class "comes to the board" and participates  Back to the days of Slate – 1:1 Instruction  Flip the Classroom – Read (or Watch) at Home, Work in Class Available tools are…  Polling  Whiteboards  Chat  Student status  Online distribution of content  Audio/video capabilities October 3, 2011 2011 STEMTECH CONFERENCE 6

TIME SAVINGS ALLOWS FOR HIGHER-LEVEL STEM TASKS You want to do what - writing on a board and erase it?  Students can participate and contribute  Receive summative and formative assessment  Watch lectures as homework  Class time on problem-solving/critical thinking development Mastery Dilemma – Relies on “taking your time”  Logistical Issues – Delivery of material to students when they’re at different mastery levels  Assessment Issues – Versions of assessments for test integrity Implications For All Modes Of Instruction  Traditional  Hybrid  Online October 3, 2011 2011 STEMTECH CONFERENCE 7

DYKNOW SOFTWARE October 3, 2011 2011 STEMTECH CONFERENCE 9

STEM APPLICATIONS Some Examples  Illustrations of sequences with animated timelines  Osmosis of a cell  Electrical Circuit Analysis (flow) Problem Analysis  Solve a problem incorrectly on a panel  Students replay and determine error(s)  Students recreate problem accurately or explain the error(s) Reflection of Problem Solving  Animated replay of student work  Able to see student’s sequencing Group Work  Create Student Legend – Different Color Ink  Replay their contributions October 3, 2011 2011 STEMTECH CONFERENCE 10

BENEFITS OF A COLLABORATORY  Increased engagement and participation from students  Model for other classrooms  Lectures assigned as homework  Group work, formative assessment, self-reflection occurs during class time with instructor serving as a collaborator.  Broadcast and synchronize with online and in-class students (increased capacity) October 3, 2011 2011 STEMTECH CONFERENCE 11

BENEFITS OF A COLLABORATORY  Mastery level learning - allow for slight variations in learning pace and multiple attempts to demonstrate learning asynchronously  Note taking is collaborative  Students can show their work with assessments (all work – even erased)  Able to archive student learning for portfolio creation, accreditation  Training space for faculty to learn online/classroom technologies (Faculty "sandbox")?
