The Science of Living Things Agriculture Defined

Agriscience is the application of scientific principles and new technologies to agriculture.

Agriculture Defined 2.Agriculture is defined as the activities concerned with the production of plants and animals, and related supplies, services, mechanics, products, processing and marketing. Agriculture generally has some tie-in or tie-back to animals or plants. However, production agriculture, or farming and ranching, accounts for only one-fifth of the total jobs in agriculture. – The other four-fifths of the jobs in agriculture are non farm and non ranch jobs. – Agribusiness refers to commercial firms that have developed with or stemmed out of agriculture.

Agriculture Defined 3.Aquaculture means the growing and management of living thing in water, such as fish.

Agriculture Defined 4. Agricultural engineering means the application of mechanical and other engineering principles in agricultural settings.

Agriculture Defined 5.Agriculture science technology refers to the use of modern principles and practices for animal growth and management.

Agriculture Defined 6.Crop Science refers to use of modern principles in growing and managing crops.

Agriculture Defined 7.Soil science refers to the study of the properties and management of soil to grow plants.

Agriculture Defined 8.Biotechnology refers to the management of genetic characteristics transmitted from one generation to another.

Agriculture Defined 9.Integrated pest management refers to the many different methods used together to control insects, diseases, rodents, and other pests. Cucurbit yellow vine disease

Agriculture Defined 10.Organic Food is a term used for foods that have been grown without the use of chemical pesticides.

Agriscience Around Us 1. Agriscience and technologies have helped humans change their living conditions from dependence on hand labor to a highly mechanized society. Food and Fiver production have become much more efficient.

Agriscience Around Us Fewer than 2 percent of the people in America are farmers. – Each farmer produces enough food for approximately 135 people. In fact, the large surplus of food that is produced in the United States is shipped (exported) to many other countries in the world.

Agriscience Around Us 2. Whether you live in the city, town, or country, you are surrounded by the world of agriscience. Plants release oxygen into the air. Animals provide companionship as pets and assistance with work. Plants and Animals are sources of food.

Agriscience Around Us Plants are used extensively to decorate homes, businesses, shopping malls, buildings and grounds. Turf grass is used for decorative as well as soil-holding purposes. Flowers used by florists. Lumber is shipped from the United States to other parts of the world. Journalism and Communications – Magazines, journals, and newspapers. – Radio and Television

Agriscience and other sciences a.Biology is the basic science of plant and animals life b.Chemistry is another basic science that deals with the characteristics of elements or simple substances.

Agriscience and other sciences c.Biochemistry focuses on chemistry as it applies to living matter. d.Entomology is the science of insect life.

Agriscience and other sciences e.Agronomy is the science of soil and field crops. f.Horticulture is the science of fruits, vegetables, and ornamentals.

Agriscience and other sciences g.Ornamentals are plants used for their appearance. i.Animals Sciences are applied sciences that involve animal growth care and management. bedding plants

Agriscience and other sciences i.Agriculture Economics addresses the management of agricultural resources, including farms and agribusinesses. j.Agriculture Education covers teaching and program management in agricultural endeavors.
