The Metric System Universal system of measurement. (Based on 10s) - “easy” conversions Uses base units with prefixes to ID degree of measure Everyone uses it, especially in science and medicine.

Base Units: Length, Mass, & Volume  Length is the distance between two points –measured in meters.  Mass is the amount of matter in an object –measured in grams.  Volume is the amount of space taken up by an object –measured in liters.

The Tools  Length – Meter stick or ruler  Volume – Graduated cylinder or submersion  Mass – Balance or scale

Prefixes and Conversion – The Metric Stairs  Mega – 1,000,000  Kilo – 1000  Hecto – 100  Deka – 10  BASE UNIT – 1  Deci – 1/10  Centi – 1/100  Milli – 1/1,000  Micro – 1/1,000,000  Nano – 1/1,000,000,000

Prefixes in the Metric System Kilo (k) - base times 1000 Hecto (h) – base times 100 Deca (dk) – base times 10 BASE UNIT (meter, liter, or gram) Deci (d) – base divided by 10 Centi (c) – base divided by 100 Milli (m) – base divided by 1000 King Henry Died ByBy Drinking Chocolate Milk Mega (M) – base times 1,000,000 Micro (µ) – base divided by 1,000,000 Nano (n) – base divided by 1,000,000,000
