1 The International System of Units (SI Units)
Also known as the metric system

2 Not based on any one particular number... CONFUSING!
U.S. Customary System 12 inches in 1 foot 3 feet in 1 yard 4 quarts in 1 gallon Not based on any one particular number... CONFUSING!

3 The International System of Units
The United States is the only industrialized country that does not use SI units

4 The International System of Units
The entire metric system is based on units of 10

5 Base Units (copy the following chart)
Measurement Base Unit Abbreviation Length Meter m Volume Liter L Mass Gram g Time Second s Temperature Degrees Celsius ° C

6 Metric Prefixes Prefixes indicate which multiple of ten to us
kilo- (k)= 1,000 base units hecto- (h)= 100 base units deka- (dk)= 10 base units Base unit (g, m, L, etc.) deci- (d)= 1/10 base unit, so 1 base unit = 10 d__ centi- (c)= 1/100 base unit, so 1 base unit = 100 c___ milli- (m)= 1/1000 base unit, so 1 base unit = 1,000 m___

7 Large units of Length 1,000 meters = 1 kilometer (km)

8 Smaller units of Length
100 cm = 1 m 1,000 mm = 1 m 10 mm = 1 cm

9 *Centimeters, NOT inches!
Measuring length Use a meter stick Or a ruler *Centimeters, NOT inches!

10 Mass Mass is a measure of how much matter something contains

11 Units of Mass 1,000 grams = 1 kilogram

12 Smaller units of Mass 1,000 milligrams = 1 gram

13 Measuring Mass Use a triple-beam balance scale

14 Start with the middle beam (100s), move to the back beam (10s), and last the front beam (1s). Add them all up

15 Volume Volume is a measure of the amount of space a piece of matter takes up Ex: Inflated balloon takes up more space than an empty balloon

16 Units of Volume 1,000 milliliters = 1 liter

17 Measuring Volume Use a graduated cylinder

18 Using a graduated cylinder
Meniscus: the curve of the surface of the liquid To find the volume of a liquid, read the mark that lines up with the bottom of the meniscus

19 Mini Quiz How many meters are in a kilometer? 10 100 1000
When measuring the volume of a liquid, you read the line that lines up with the _____ of the meniscus. Bottom Middle Top
