Arts in Education

Arts in the Classroom Music?Painting?Drawing?Building?Dancing?Performing?

Did you know?? Music & development go hand in hand Using music to help with development needs to start early.

Examples Birth to 12 months and Social-emotional development Playing music during tough transitions Move to the beat 12 to 24 months and Physical development Songs and activities 24 to 36 months and Language and Literacy Development Tell a story with a song

Creative Movement aka Dance An art form that specifically uses the human body in motion There is a wide variety of ways people can move. The possibilities are endless

Can you dance? Dance is “both a physical activity and a vehicle for self-expression.” – Connie Dow It is a “rich experience of exploring and creating” with the different ways you can move.

Play! “The theater, the theater!” “Let’s pretend!” Kids are able to get involved mentally, emotionally, and physically with no reservations. “They believe what they see.”

Create a Masterpiece Kids express themselves and work on fine motor skills. Scribble with crayons? Make a macaroni statue? Put paint on paper? Exercising their minds and being creative

Here’s the sad part.. Classes and programs being downsized and cut Kokomotribune.com Art, music and PE classes being cut in Monroe County Weac.org 1993 – “Legislatures imposed revenue caps on public school spending.” Spending on certain programs have been cut back.

This will make you think… Cuts in arts programs = more money being spent in the end, lower test scores, and more frequent behavioral issues.

Music Therapy in Special Education Physical & Mental Stimulation
