The United States Rising as a World Power Economic Expansion Or Imperialism

World Setting Late 1800’s industry is booming Financial Panic because of over production Great Britain has reached its peak in its quest for territories

Imperialism Stronger nations attempt to create empires by dominating weaker nations: economically politically culturally militarily

Why did Imperialism Spread 4 Leading Factors 1.Economic: increased need for natural resources because of expansion and new markets to sell goods. 2.National: competition between European countries on an expansion level Nationalism: devotion to ones nation

FACTORS CONT. 3.Military: Advance in military technological production. Naval and Army have bases strategically placed around the world for fuel and supplies. 4. Humanitarian: Duty to spread the blessings of western civilization, its laws medicines and Christian religion Spurred on by the best of intentions!

Europe Leads the Way Great Britain, France, & Russia already in on the game, while the USA is playing catch up. Unites States denies that it wishes to annex new territory Annex: join a new territory to an existing country.

The US & Imperialism George Washington’s Farewell address. Stay clear of Permanent alliances Isolationism Avoid foreign conflict Leaders did not listen 50,000 troops sent to Mexico after France invades “Seward’s Folly” Purchase of Alaska from Russia

Interest in the Pacific 1853 American fleet in Tokyo Bay and convinced Japan to open trade relations 1860’s both the US & European countries signed a series of treaties with China allowing expanded trade relations US motives, strategic position for refueling and repair stations for naval vessels

By 1867 the Midway islands have been annexed by the US govt. by a signed treaty with Hawaii Benefits for Hawaii allowed them to sell sugar in the US duty free as long as they did not sell or lease land to any other foreign power.

Promoting Economic Growth Economic problems of the nation could only be solved by expanding its markets Already beginning to dominate International Markets Rockefellers Standard Oil American Telephone & Telegraph McCormick Farm Machinery Singer Sewing Machines Kodak Cameras Sherwin Williams Paint

Central America & the US Investments in the economies of other Countries The United Fruit Company Minor C Keith US $ invested into the Costa Rica In return: long term leases for lands and rail lines million bananas exported to the US per year

United Fruit Company Eventually gains control and dominates the governments of: 1. Costa Rica 2. Guatemala 3. Honduras.

Banana Republics A term used to describe central American nations dominated by US business interest

Promoting American Security Lobbyist who favored a strong navy pushed expansion forward Joined with business interest to push congress to build new modern ships in order to protect oversea trade “The Influence of Sea Power upon History ” by Captain Alfred T. Mahan

An influential Officer He later became an Admiral He said that the US economic future depended on gaining new markets abroad A powerful Navy would protect markets from foreign rivals In reaction to the push the Naval Advisory Board was established by congress Pushed to increase Naval budget 2yrs later 3 cruisers and 2 battleships were authorized by congress

Naval Act of 1890 Construction of more battleships, gunboats, and torpedo boasts, and cruisers By 1900 the US had the most powerful Navy in the World

Preserving the American Spirit 3 Main Forces that Felt the US was loosing its Vitality Senator Henry Cabot Lodge Historian Frederick Jackson Turner Young Politician Theodore Roosevelt

Justifications “Closing the frontier would sap the nations energy.” Quest for an empire might restore the country’s pioneer spirit Social Darwinist believed that expansionist was not only destiny but a noble pursuit to spread Christianity and modern civilization to others.

Points to Remember This was a period of time before scientific studies showed that no racial or national group is superior to any other Beliefs included that the civilizations produced by Anglo Saxons & Teutonic's peoples were superior The takeover of new territories were justified just like with the Native Americans

The Future of US Foreign Policy Public opinion begins to favor expansion They wanted the new markets it would bring and favorable trade relations However everything has a price and they did not count on how expensive it would be. Political, Military Entanglements would bring difficult, bloody, and painful foreign conflicts.
