 Consists of programs that control the operations of the computer and its device.  Serves as the interface between the user, the application software, and the computers hardware.

 Operating system- contains instructions that coordinate all activities of the hardware devices in a computer  Stand alone operating system- operating system that works on desktops and laptops  Embedded operating system- resides on an internal chip

 Personal software includes personal finance software, tax preparation software, legal software, entertainment software, and more.  Most of these softwares are priced at less than $25-$50.

 Personal Finance Software  Personal finance software is a simplified accounting program that helps you pay bills, balance your checkbook, and track your personal income and expenses.  Popular personal finance software includes Quicken and Microsoft Money.  Using personal finance software can help you determine where, and for what purpose, you spending money so you can manage your finances.  Packages usually offer a variety of online services like Online Banking. Online Banking offers access to account balances, provides bill payment services, and allows you to download transactions and statements from the web directly to your computer.

 Software programs, including operations systems, usually are designated by a version number.  A new version of a software product designed to replace an older version of the same product is called an upgrade.  Most software releases by increasing the version number by a whole number, for example, version 4.0 to 5.0.  Minor software improvements change version numbers by less than a whole number, such as 4.0 to 4.2.  Most updates are free of charge.

 Using Different Software Versions  When working with different versions of the same software, two general rules can help make your work easier.  First, an older version of a software package may not open a file created in a newer version of the software.  Second, newer versions usually open files created in older versions.

 Online help provides one with assistance from within your application. It is the electronic equivalent of a user manual.  Many programs provide extensive Web-based help, including tutorials, videos, and more.  Trade books and FAQ

 School Management software- this allows the district and school personnel to manage the districts operations  Student Management software-a program that allows administrators and teachers to manage information about students  Grade book software-allows teachers to track and organize student tests, homework, and scores.
