Presentation transcript:

Types of skull sutures : 1.Metopic or frontal suture: Separates the frontal bone into two halves. 2.Sagittal suture : separates the two parietal bones and extends from the anterior fontanelle to the posterior fontanelle. 3.CoronaL suture: Separate the frontal bones from the parietal ones. 4. lambdoid suture : Separate the posterior edge of the parietal bone from the occipital bone. 5.Squamosal suture : Occupied the superior border of the squamous part of the temporal bone. Articulate anteriorly with sphenoid, superiorly with parietal bone and posteriorly with occipital bone.

Skull Abnormalities 1.Craniosynotosis: Premature closure of the cranial suture result in overgrowth of the cranial bones. This may be simple in case of one suture defects or complex in case of more than one suture. 2.Scaphocephaly : Premature fusion of the sagittal suture. 3. Plagiocephaly : classified into different kinds such as : 1. Frontal plagiocephaly (caused by unilateral coronal synostosis). 2. Occipital plagiocephaly ( caused by unilateral synostosis of the lambdoid suture). 3. Parallelism: A distinct deformity in frontal and occipital bones. 4.Acrania : Partial or complete absence of skull ( anencephaly). 5.Cranioschisis : Incomplete formation of the skull with defective development of the brain and often an encephalocoele or meningocoele. 6.Acrocephaly ( tower head or skull) : The top of the head is pointed or conical due to premature closure of the coronal and lambdoid sutures. 7.Macrognathia : Abnormally enlarged jaws. 8.Maxillary protrusion : Prolongation of both maxilla and mandible. 9.Micrognathia : reduced mandible.

Anencephaly
