Table of Contents Chapter 1: Why You Should Play Hockey Chapter 2:The Game Chapter 3: Equipment Chapter 4:Rules and Referees Chapter 5:Forwards and Offence Chapter 6: Defense and Goaltending Chapter 7: The Legends Chapter 8: Hockey Now and Then Glossary

Chapter 1: Why You Should Play Hockey Hockey is a really fun sport and it is a game for all ages. When you play hockey you can meet new friends and score goals and get exercise at the same time! There are a lot of options playing hockey. If you are not that good you can go to a clinic so you can get better. If you are super good at hockey and better than everyone else you can try out for a travel team. On travel teams there are better players on your team and you will play against better players and you will get better faster. If you are not as good as the people or you do not make it you can play in a house league, where it is a little easer. When you get better you try out for a travel team.

Chapter 2: The Game The game of hockey is different than most sports. In order to win, you have to score goals. You use sticks to hit or shoot the puck. You try to block pucks on defense. That’s the basics.

Chapter 3: Equipment Hockey is a very rough sport and that’s why you need a lot of equipment. The equipment is hockey pants, chest protector, shin guards, jersey, cup, a helmet and hockey socks. The goalie wears different equipment. The goalie wears a helmet, big leg pads, chest protector, a bigger cup, goalie pants, and a neck guard(s).

Chapter 4: Rules and Referees There are many rules in hockey. Some of them are called penalties. The referees call the penalties. Some penalties are tripping, interference, and fighting. If you get a penalty, you will have to spend 2min, 5min in the penalty box or get suspended for the game and maybe some others.

Chapter 5: Forwards and Offence Everyone plays offence but the forwards have the most important job on offence. The forwards try to get the puck and get a good shot on net when the other players (two defensemen) stay at the point trying to stop the puck from going past the blue line. If the puck gets past the blue line the team that has the puck is in a offside position.

Chapter 6: Defense and Goaltending Playing defense is really important in hockey. If the puck gets past the goalie the other team gets a point. Just like offence everybody plays defense. But when the puck gets past the defense it is up to the goalie to stop the puck from going into the net.

Chapter 7: The Legends Gordie Howe played for the Detroit red wings and he is the best hockey player of all time. Gordie knew how to fight. In one game he got in a fight and broke Lou Fontinatos (new york rangers) nose. In 32 years Gordie scored 975 goals and had 1,383 assists and 2,358 points. Gordie is clearly the best of all time. Wayne Greskey is one of the best hockey players of all time. Wayne holds the record of scoring the most goals in a single season. Wayne also has the most points in a single season. Wayne played twenty seasons. His statistics show that he is one of the best of all time.

Chapter 8: Hockey Now and Then Hockey back in the 1940s where not that safe. The players did not ware helmets back then! The goalies did not where masks Most of the equipment is the same but now it is more protective. They still ware jerseys and most of the rules are the same.

Defensemen – two players that are mostly focused on defense Goalie – a player that tries to stop the puck. Offence – when your team has the puck. Penalties - when someone brakes certain rules. Penalty box - Where players sit when they commit a penalty. Point- near the blue line Puck – a rubber disc used to play hockey..

Glossary Score goals – when someone shoots the puck over the goal line within the goal. Shoot or Shot –When a player uses his stick to direct the puck toward the net. Statistics – Numbers, data, and records.
