Chapter 1: The Nature of Physical Science Section 1: Science and Scientists

 What is science? Knowledge gained by observing natural events and conditions Discover facts and make laws that can be tested

Why ask questions? First step in gathering knowledge. Questions spark our curiosity and interests.

What is an investigation? What are the 2 key steps needed? The search for the answers to scientific questions. Asking meaningful questions and doing careful research.

Explain the three methods of investigation. Research: look up information in books, Internet, other reliable sources. Observation: Using your 5 senses to note what is happening. Experimentation: Creating a hypothesis that you can test out through an experiment. These 3 methods go together.

Describe 3 ways science applies the answers. Saving lives –Example: crash tests in cars save lives

Describe 3 ways science applies the answers. Saving resources –Recycling –Alternative fuels for cars

Describe 3 ways science applies the answers. Protecting the environment –Reducing harmful pollution –Hybrid cars

Describe each of these fields of study and what these scientists investigate. Meteorologist: Studies the atmosphere. Investigates weather patterns.

Describe each of these fields of study and what these scientists investigate. Geochemist: Studies the chemistry of rocks, minerals, and soil and their value. Investigates energy sources.

Describe each of these fields of study and what these scientists investigate. Ecologist: Studies the behavior of living things. Investigates the problems living things have in their environment.

Describe each of these fields of study and what these scientists investigate. Volcanologist: Studies volcanoes. Investigates the causes for volcanic eruptions.

Describe each of these fields of study and what these scientists investigate. Science Illustrator: Uses both art and science. Draws scientific diagrams and illustrations.

Summary- Why is science important? Science can help explain the world around us. Through observation and experiments, questions can be answered. These answers can help save lives, resources, and protect the environment. There are many types of scientists that investigate questions and problems that affect us.
