Which words from vocab #1 might be related to the word “grid”?

Basic Map Skills

Map Title Tells you the place that is shown on the map:

New York

Map Grid: Lines that form a pattern of squares on a map. These lines may have numbers or letters to help you locate a place on the map. In most cases, the grid on a map will be made up of Latitude or Longitude.

Compass Rose Shows which way the directions point on a map:

Cardinal Directions: What are the four main direction? NorthEastSouthWest

Symbol Something that represents a feature on a map. Example: _____ for a city or ____ for a capital city.

Legend or key Tells what the symbols or colors on a map mean

Inset A small map inside a larger one. Alaska and Hawaii are put in an inset because they are so far away from the rest of the states that they do not fit on the larger map.

Scale Tells how much smaller a map is than the area it shows. The scale helps you measure distance on a map. Example: One inch on the map = 500 real miles
