Engineering and Technology Management Group Group Status Report May 2014

Highlights TC Health:  A diverse set of healthy Technical Committees. Conference Related:  Great support by ETMG at CASE 2013, Space 2013 and Sci-Tech  TCM organized the Management Roundtable for CASE  Econ – Second Cost and Risk Analysis Workshop. Standards:  SETC – AIAA-G-135, Aerospace Systems Integration Guide. Awards:  History has their bevy of prestigious manuscript awards.  SATTC and LA3 – best student paper competition for Space Education and Outreach:  History – Weighed-in on the first in flight controversy.  SATTC – Participating in ComicCom.  SATTC – Developed Aerospace Pocket Guide.  LA3 - Co-hosting and Chairing the Galloway Space Law Symposium.  LA3 – Supported two Moot Court activities (DC and Beijing). Public Policy:  LA3 – Export Control policy papers for CVD. 3

Success Story: Meeting the Public at ComicCon The SAT TC had a booth at the Pittsburgh ComicCon (September 27-29, 2013). Participating in this event allowed the TC to interact with a segment of the general public that is particularly interested in aerospace technology but typically has little access to aerospace professionals. Through the course of the three day event TC members John Christian and Jarret Lafleur interacted with over 300 convention attendees and handed out more than 400 items of aerospace materials. >220 NASA Spinoff magazines >25 Aerospace America magazines >50 SAT TC aerospace pocket guides Their participation was recognized by the ComicCon event organizers with an invitation to deliver a presentation at the next Pittsburgh ComicCon in which the SAT TC participates. 4

Success Story: Meeting the Public at ComicCon ComicCon attendees asked a number of great questions, including the following:  How do spacecraft stay in orbit?  How much longer will we be operating the ISS?  When will people go to Mars?  What type of food do astronauts eat?  Why did we cut/defund the space program?  How do I get to go into space?  What is the replacement for the space shuttle?  What are my career options in aerospace engineering or physics/astronomy? 5

6 Aerospace Pocket Guide

Upcoming/Ongoing Projects SETC will continue to work with the Journal of Aircraft on the inclusion of systems engineering articles. Econ and SETC have made tremendous progress in moving forward with their Systems Engineering book development. History – SciTech 2015 session on the history of NACA and NASA. History – continuing efforts to support the capture of oral history from the aerospace community. SATTC – Working with the YP Committee to enhance the forum experience for younger members. 7

Key Issues for the ETMG Two Points:  Keeping the momentum going. –All six EMTG TCs are operating well, doing good works (adding value for the TC membership and to AIAA). –Good continuity with Group Leadership going into next year.  Supporting the Integration Tier of the new Forum structure. –A good start, but still plenty of opportunities. 8

Opportunities and the Path Forward Continue developing connections with the new forum model, particularly in the Integration Tier.  Sort of the sweet-spot for ETMG TCs. Build on the foundation created by the SAT TC to reach out to the general public who have an interest in the aerospace. Director/Deputies to continue to work with the ETMG TCs to ensure:  Health of the TCs (membership, officers and projects).  TC is getting what it needs from AIAA, and vice versa.  Opportunities for YP participation in the TCs. 10
