International Literacy Day 2015 South African women and girls empowered by literacy program to take their place in society.

Definition of Literacy literacy noun lit·er·a·cy \ˈli-t(ə-)rə-sē\ : the ability to read and write : the quality or state of being literate

There are still 757 million adults including 115 million youths in the world who cannot read or write a simple sentence. Roughly two- thirds of them are female.

The lowest national literacy rates are observed in sub-Saharan Africa and in South and West Asia.

Adult literacy rates were below 50% in the following countries: 1.Afghanistan 2.Benin 3.Burkina Faso 4.Central African Republic 5.Chad 6.Côte d'Ivoire 7.Ethiopia 8.Guinea 9.Haiti 10.Liberia 11.Mali 12.Mauritania 13.Niger 14.Senegal 15.Sierra Leone 16.South Sudan
