This lesson was designed for an Agriculture Science course. The lesson is designed to fit into a unit on Energy Conservation and Natural Resources.

You have been hired by the engineering corp. YGRENE to create a presentation that showcases a specific source of energy. Your presentation must be a poster or display board that shows the different types of sources of a specific type of energy. Your final project will be graded on content, creativity, and neatness (see attached rubric). The following are your possible sources: Fossil Fuels Nuclear Energy Hydroelectricity Solar Energy Geothermal Energy Wind Energy

Students needed to include the final items in their display: a picture showing how we turn this energy into electricity a list of sources of this energy (as local as possible) a description of how it is used a description of the problems with this energy (environmental, people concerns, politics, etc) an explanation of how we will be using this energy in the future (are there any current legislations regarding the energy?) any fun facts about this energy source (what percent of our power comes from this particular type of energy?)

Students were introduced to the project and allowed to begin their research on Day 1. The Team was there to observe this process. Students were given an additional 3 days in class to work on the project. Once the project was completed, they were displayed and judged in an Energy Showcase.

During this process our group’s goal was to get and keep students engaged in a lesson. How we evaluated the effectiveness of our lesson in meeting this goal: During the pre-observation we visited about student/teacher expectations During the lesson the teacher observers used a rubric to document student behaviors during the lesson During the post-observation we reviewed the expectations and behaviors that were seen and brainstormed possible interventions.

To measure the success of learner engagement, observers looked at the following behaviors: Student participation of discussion, ON TOPIC Student participation of lesson in an appropriate manner Students exhibiting positive feedback orally and physically (raising hands and body language) Student interactions with peers were appropriate, both as a team and as individuals.

Overall: Students were engaged. Some questions were raised about the quality of engagement; how does the instructor know the students are comprehending the material that they are finding? For the 2 nd Lesson, suggestions for dealing with a larger group of students in a different facility: Have task checks, where the instruct signs off at key points in the project If the lesson is implemented in groups, have the students assigned roles in the groups Have groups set daily goals for work progress Give students more guidance on the number and type of sources that they need to use.
