Editing Effects

Kuleshov Effect Discovery by Lev Kuleshov that people assign emotions to film based on the sequence of shots they are shown

CUT The most basic edit Appears seamless Mimics a blink Performed either manually (actually cutting the film) or electronically (end of filming)

DISSOLVE Used to transitions scenes, but leave the audience with the residual memory of the previous shot, scene, or sequence The scenes are not connected visually, but by content Provides an element of foreshadowing

FADE Blends the old shot and new shot together with a white frame or black frame in between Used to transition between two shots, scenes, or sequences that are connected visually* or thematically

SHAPE (CIRCLE) Used to transition in or out of a fantasy sequence, usually “comic book” style Cues the audience that the action of the scene is unnatural Helps suspend disbelief by making the contextual composition look manufactured and unnatural

SPLIT (VERTICAL OUT) Transition often used to imitate a curtain opening, as in a theatrical production Could be used to introduce a film-within-a- film or a secondary plotline

WHEEL CLOCKWISE Transition used to show the passage of time Gives the scene a manufactured, false look Generally used in animation, children’s movies, or live-action comic book style films

WIPE (RIGHT) Transition showing the passage of time (forward) that is more natural than the wheel, though can still look artificial Physically moves the audience’s vision to the right (flashforward)

WIPE (LEFT) Transition showing the passage of time (backward) that is more natural than the wheel, though can still look artificial Physically moves the audience’s vision to the left (flashback)

Match Cut A graphic match between edits An edit where Shot (A) and Shot (B) have either matching images, sounds, or locations

Montage A scene of brief shots that collectively edited together create a new meaning

Jump Cut A cut that creates a lack of continuity by leaving out part of the action, thereby drawing attention to itself A random edit with seemingly no purpose

Cross Cutting The editing together of two unrelated lines of action to show: –Thematic connection –Simultaneous occurrence

Continuity Errors When the action doesn’t match from shot to shot –Examples: Varying food levels, actor positions, prop placement
