Lab Skills Lesson 9

LO- Level 3 – Identify the parts on a microscope. Level 4 – Outline how to safely view slides under a microscope. Level 5 –examine a slide under a microscope, describing what can be seen. Level 6 – calculate the magnification of the microscope.

WordMeaning microscope Used to magnify small things. magnification How much bigger a microscope makes something appear. eyepiece lens Part of the microscope, containing a lens, you look down. focusing wheel Wheel on a microscope that moves parts of the microscope to get the image into focus. objective lens Part of the microscope containing a lens closest to the stage.

WordMeaning stagePart of the microscope. You put slides on it. slide Glass sheet that a specimen is put on. specimen What you look at down a microscope. coverslip Thin piece of glass used to hold a specimen in place on a slide. stain Dye used to colour parts of a cell to make them easier to see.
