1 Magnifying Glass Magnify What does magnify mean?
-to make a small object look larger Does it make the object larger? NO, just look larger

2 Magnifying Glass What is are the structures on a magnifying glass?
-a lens and a handle to hold lens handle

3 Magnifying Glass What is the function of a magnifying glass?
-to make a small object look larger by bending light through a single lens

4 Microscope Notes

5 Microscopes Microscope—a tool that makes small objects look larger
Two kinds of microscopes: Simple microscopes use one lens Compound microscopes use two or more lenses.

6 Magnification - to make things look larger than they are

7 The lenses magnify an object by bending light to make the object look larger.

8 Kinds of Compound Microscopes
Mirror microscopes Light microscopes

9 Microscopes have 2 or more convex lenses:
Compound Microscopes have 2 or more convex lenses: 1 lens eyepiece eyepiece near the top where you put your eye 2nd lens objective lens objective lens closest to the object you are looking at

10 Which is better? not so good better best resolution Resolution means the ability to clearly distinguish the individual parts (of an object); is another term for the sharpness of an image

11 Microscope Micro = small, tiny scope = to see or
instrument for viewing Greek: “mikros” small “skopein” to look Put these together and you get: an instrument for viewing small, tiny objects

12 Microscopes make a specimen look bigger.
The specimen is the tiny object that you are looking at under the microscope. Magnification Microscopes make a specimen look bigger. The magnification tells you how many times bigger an object looks. 2x Two times bigger 3x Three times bigger actual size

13 Calculating the Total Magnification
of the Eyepiece Magnification of the Objective Lens Total Magnification x = Ex: 10x 4x 40x Multiplied by Equals Now create an example of your own. *Remember to multiply the 2 numbers.

14 Coarse adjustment knob: makes rough, large adjustments to focus the specimen.
Use this knob when first looking for the specimen. Underline “Coarse” and review that coarse means rough. Underline “rough, large”.

15 Fine adjustment knob: makes tiny, small adjustments to focus the specimen.
Use this knob for fine, precise focusing (fine tuning). Underline “Fine” and think of fine tuning Underline “small, tiny”.
