Population Pyramids

Go through the following slides and answer the questions… raise your hand if you need help!! Never be afraid to ask questions. These charts show the amount of males and females within different age groups in the population.

Population pyramids of Less Developed Countries typically have a wide base and a narrow top. This represents a high birth rate and high death rate. Population pyramids of More Economically Developed Countries typically have a roughly equal distribution of population throughout the age groups. The top obviously gets narrower as a result of deaths.

The horizontal bars show the percentage of male and female in each age group.

Which age group has the greatest proportion of people?ANSWER: Which bar includes the students in this classroom?ANSWER: Are there more people in your age group or in the age group below yours?ANSWER:

A pyramid shows the history of a country's population growth. People are now between 40 and 60 and are called Baby Boomers. What do you think happened 60 years ago that caused the baby boom?ANSWER:

How is Congo's pyramid different from that of the U.S.?ANSWER: Which age group in Congo is the largest?ANSWER: Does this surprise you?ANSWER:

Now look at Germany. How is the population’s age different?ANSWER: How is it different from Congo?ANSWER:

Why do we need this information? Why would a country 's leaders want to know the proportion of the population in different age groups? ANSWER: What difference does the age of the people in a country make? ANSWER: What kinds of products do OLDER people use? What kinds of services do they need? ANSWER:  Is it important for a government leader or planner to know the age of the population they are serving? ANSWER:

POPULATION EXPLOSION

Questions about those last 4 slides… There are 7 continents in the world. List them. ANSWER: Which continent has the worst infant mortality rate? ANSWER: Which continent has the most red dots (largest pop.)? ANSWER: Why do you think the world’s population has exploded the last 150 years? ANSWER:
