Section : 2 lesson:2 Grammar corner: The passive A) Look at these sentences from passage one.' Trees’. How would you describe the form of the phrase underlined? All over the world trees are being planted. ‘.. A 60% increase in agriculture production will be needed.’

These sentences are in the passive. The writer could have said. All over the world people are planting million of trees. and We will need a 60% increase in agricultural production. What is the difference between these two sentences and the sentences of similar meaning used in the passage?

The difference is in the sentences mentioned in the passage the important thing is the action but in these sentences the dower of the action is more important than the action. So when the action is important than the doer of it we use the passive voice. Form: the verb to be + past participle.

Example:People cut down tress for fuel Trees are cut down for fuel. Now change these sentences into the passive: 1- people use charcoal for cooking. Charcoal is used for cooking. 2- We must look after our forests. Our forests must be looked after. 3- Trees grow beside other crops. Beside other crops trees are grown.

4- We can prevent diseases like cholera. Diseases like cholera can be prevented. 5- People buy gum Arabic. Gum Arabic is bought by people. 6- We import oil.Oil is imported 7- We will soon export oil. Oil will be exported soon. Prepared and designed By:
