Workshop Agenda Español in the U.S. The Instructional System Design Designing Internet training for the Spanish-speaking patron Training development Presentation tips

This Workshop Is Brought to You by the Infopeople Project Infopeople is a federally-funded grant project supported by the California State Library. it provides a wide variety of training to California libraries. Infopeople workshops are offered around the state and are open registration on a first-come, first-served basis. For a complete list of workshops, and for other information about the project, go to the Infopeople website at infopeople.org.

Learning Goals In this workshop you will learn how to teach Spanish-speaking patrons to: Use internet browsers Set up and use Use search engines Print from the Internet

Español in the U.S. Interesting statistics 35.3 million Latinos in the U.S. now (11%) by 2050 U.S. will be “third largest Spanish-speaking country” Role of libraries free access to services and information Internet users at the library The future of Latino immigration changing type of Latino immigrant increase representation in professional roles

Designing Your Internet Training for the Spanish- speaking patron

Instructional System Design (ISD) We will focus on applying this instructional model to train Spanish-Speaking patrons A model for determining the who, what, when, where, why, and how of training

Five steps of the ISD model Analysis Design Development Implementation Evaluation

Analysis Research who is your audience Research what they need to know Find out what they know/don’t know Community Based Organizations (CBOs) Chamber of Commerce other resources…. surveys (handout), interviews… pre-test (handout)

Design Define your training objectives Determine the content of your instruction what are you going to teach them? how much information will you include? what tools are you going to be using?

Development Develop your lessons and sequence of your instruction Determine the “instructional situation” include gradual instruction alternate demonstration and practice use engaging examples where: how: timing: computer lab online and printed materials short sessions

Implementation Determine the delivery of the training to Latino patrons date and time Determine training staff Accommodate your audience assistants and volunteers children and seniors

Evaluation Assess whether your training objectives have been met Assess the effectiveness of the trainer/facilitator Identify changes to the training setting and material have them perform the task solicit their honest opinion!! was your training effective?

Development of Training

Facilitation Tips Demonstrations While demonstrating: explain what is happening point to things on screen Make mistakes: experts have problems, too Ask questions to: verify knowledge get them thinking

“Enseñar” Internet Browsers

Exercise #1: Internet browsers Develop a short lesson on using Internet browsers Check your lesson against the Lesson Plan Brief discussion on each participant’s approach

Your Spanish-speaking Patron

Adult students are mature people and prefer to be treated as such Adults have needs which are concrete and immediate Adults are more impatient in the pursuit of learning objectives Characteristics of Adult Learners

They have useful past experience Adults enjoy applying their talents and knowledge in the learning situation They are sometimes fatigued when they attend classes Characteristics of Adult Learners

Emotional Characteristics of Latino Patrons Learning motivation past experiences may have affected the desire to learn your opportunity to help re-kindle the motivation Learning entitlement Latinos do not always feel entitled to free services Learning apprehension learning something new is intimidating

Language barrier / literacy barrier Computer literacy Humor and sociability Personal Characteristics of Latino Patrons

Learning Styles Auditory analogies associations Visual illustrations graphics Hands-On practice the best!

“Enseñar” Search Engines

Facilitation Tips Delivering the Training Structure begin with a clear statement of the training content end revisiting all they have learned offer reassurance (opportunity to retrain) Make it easy to listen to you slow down - be mindful of multiple accents put enthusiasm in your voice and words Ask questions check with your audience repeatedly silence does not imply understanding

Exercise #2 Using Search Engines Develop a lesson on using Internet Search Engines Check your lesson against the Lesson Plan Teach your lesson to someone in another group Gather feedback on your lesson

“Enseñar”

Facilitation Tips Your Audience Working with your audience address your audience in a respectful manner “Señor”, “Señora” goes a long way… How they see you…the instructor culturally teachers hold a more elevated status for Latinos (dress for the occasion!) Allow students to participate willingly be sensitive…avoid singling out anyone

Exercise 3: Setting Up and Using Develop a lesson on setting up and using Teach your lesson to another class participant Gather feedback on your lesson Check your lesson against Lesson Sample Make needed changes to lesson

Using Your Bookmarks

Exercise #4 Using Online Tutorials Tutorial for teaching how to use the mouse La Red Desenredada LearnTheNet.com en Español

“Enseñar” Printing Information from the Internet

Facilitation Tips Opening and Transitions Start day off with the agenda Make people feel comfortable anecdotes, ice breakers, etc… jokes - humor make it casual but important Use clear transitions before we move on... to summarize... if there are no other questions...

Printing information from the Internet Review Quick Guide Review Lesson Sample

Facilitation Tips Asking Questions Watch for “yes” or “no” questions “Qué preguntas tienen?” NOT - “Tienen alguna pregunta?” Wait 5-10 seconds Reply unconditionally Repeat the questions for the group

Keep Yourself Engaged It’s OK to make mistakes teaching computer technology is “unpredictable” Learn from your audience welcome all comments validate all input Have fun!

Summary In this workshop we have covered: The ISD model for developing training How to teach: Internet browsers Search Engines Setting up and using Printing from the Internet Facilitation tips
