In Cold Blood: Sec. 8 & 9 Annelise Cornwell Maureen Archibold Sierra Segura

Characters (Who) Alvin Dewey Mrs. Hartman Perry Smith Richard (Dick) Hickock Harold Nye Bobby Rupp Hitchhikers (boy & grandpa) Mrs. Dewey

Conflict (What) Man vs. Society - Mrs. Hartman struggles to stop the townsfolk from gossiping, making assumption about the case, and being paranoid, “We can’t go on like this. Distrusting everybody, scaring each other to death. What I say is, if you want to talk about it, stay out of my place.” (191) Man vs. Self – Dick leaves Perry off at the Washateria to run errands. After a long period of time, Perry starts to over think Dick’s intentions, “And right now a carload of Kansas City police were on their way to the Washateria. But no, he was imagining too much. Dick would never do that – ‘spill his guts.’” (193)

Cont. (What) Man vs. man – Perry urges Dick to pull over for two hitchhikers, a boy and his gramp. Dick is irritated by the grandpa who is ill and wants to get rid of them both, but the young boy convinces Perry to let them stay by collecting pop bottles off the side of the road for quick cash.

Setting (Where) The story takes place in several locations: the Washateria on the road in Texas, a motel, and restaurant Dewey residence

Month (When) December Dec. 30 – Dewey leaves his home to drive to Las Vegas to capture Dick and Perry.

Important Events Agent Dewey’s Dream – Dewey dreamt that he and his partner Agent Clarence Duntz, Dr. Fenton, Tom Mahar (the manager of the Washateria), and Harrison Smith were in the Trail Room. Dewey saw Herbert Clutter accompanied by Dick and Perry. When Dewey approached the two with his gun drawn, the murderers transported to the mass grave of the Clutter family. Dewey began to shoot the men over and over, but they were indestructible. ( )

Section 9 / Characters (Who) Alvin Dewey Perry Smith Dick Hickock Agent Duntz Harold Nye Roy Church

Conflict (What) Man vs. fate – The detectives question Dick and Perry, hiding the fact that they arrested them for murder – not for violating their parole, “I guess you realized we wouldn’t have come all the way to Nevada just to chat with a couple of two-bit check chiselers.” (222) Man vs. man – Harold Nye questions Perry’s whereabouts on a Saturday. Perry answers that he was in the Fort Scott post office and his sister, but Nye knows that Barbara Smith doesn’t live in Fort Scott, “Perry has no sister living in Fort scott…” (223) This puts more pressure on Perry.

Setting (Where) Las Vegas, Nevada

Month (When) Early January

Important Events Perry was outside the Las Vegas post office to receive his packages that he mailed from Mexico when the cops showed up and followed them. The detectives take Dick and Perry in for questioning about their parole violation and most importantly their whereabouts. In addition, Nye interrogates Perry about his boat and the murders.
