2. Bell Work 8/17/15  Pick up a Vocabulary Links Sheet from my black director’s chair on your way in.  Put your name and class period on it.  We will be tested on these words NEXT Friday, August 28 th.  Take out grammar workbook money if you have it.

3. CHARACTER  A person or animal portrayed in a novel, short story, or play  Linking Story: Augustus Waters from The Fault in Our Stars is my favorite fictional character.

4. INFERENCE  an educated guess or conclusion drawn from using implied information and reasoning  Linking Story: Although there were no eyewitnesses, the detective used the evidence to make an inference about which suspect to arrest.

5. INTERNAL CONFLICT  A struggle within the mind of a literary character (man vs. self)  Linking Story: Faced with the choice to run or to stay, Roger finds himself in a state of internal conflict.

6. EXTERNAL CONFLICT  A struggle between a character and an outside force such as nature or another character  Man vs. Nature  Man vs. Man  Man vs. Society  Linking Story: The boy attempting to steal her purse caused external conflict for Mrs. Washington.

7. PLOT  The sequence of events that make up a story  Linking Story: The plot of the action movie was exciting.

8. Setting  the time AND place in which the events of the story occur  Linking Story: The setting of “Thank You Ma’am” was in Harlem, NY in the 1950’s.

9. Analyze  to examine carefully and in detail  Linking Story: We must analyze the clues in the text to understand indirect characterization.

10. Support  to use information or details to hold up or sustain a claim or position  Linking Story: You must always support your opinion with facts.

11. Cite  to mention in support, proof, or confirmation  Linking Story: You must cite evidence from the text to back up your answer.

12. Textual Evidence  specific information form the text that backs up/supports your opinion, argument, or conclusion  Linking Story: You can include textual evidence by writing “I know this because the text says…”

13. Spelling Words  ACCEPT—to receive or take.  I accept your apology.  EXCEPT—not including  Everyone was allowed to participate except those that forgot their homework.

Bell Work 8.28 Happy Friday  Staple and turn your AoW #1 into your basket.  Take out a blank sheet of notebook paper.  Head it Vocab Links Test #1  Put your name, date, and class period in the TOP RIGHT corner  Number 1-30 (no need to skip lines)  Take out your Vocab Links Sheet and STUDY!

16. When you have finished your test…  Turn your test in on my side table (under the window)  1 stack of my test, 1 stack of your answer sheets  Take out your characterization graphic organizer  Finish up all examples!  Turn in to your basket when complete!  If you finish with time remaining, you may read your independent novel  No talking; no sleeping
