Use of perspective

 Maurice Utrillo was born in 1883 in Paris  He started painting in 1905  He used impressionist technique, but somber colors (ochre, green, grey)  were his most productive years  They are called “the white period” because of the main color he used  are called the “colored years”  Utrillo suffered from poor physical and mental health, avoided fighting in WWI  Despite his health, he gained several commissions for good money  His style changed: colors became intense, black geometric lines marked the spaces  Utrillo became rich and famous  He married Lucie Valore in 1935  He abandoned the black contours. His paintings became more relaxed.  Utrillo died in on November 5, 1955 in Dax, France

He was encouraged to paint by his mother. With no other training, he drew and painted what he saw in Montmartre, Paris By 1920, he had become a legendary figure, whose paintings where known internationally In 1928, the French government awarded him the Cross of the Legion of Honor Now his early works may reach auction prices close to $1 million Utrillo mainly painted streets and buildings, with strong perspective

 Perspective is the technique of representing 3D objects on a 2D surface  The closer an object is, the bigger it looks  The farther the object is, the smaller it looks  Perspective recreates this effect  Utrillo used perspective to draw streets and buildings

 Church of St. Severin  Stark colors  Strong, severe geometry

 Impasse Cottin, 1910  Somber colors

 The annunciation with Saint Emidius, 1486

 Draw a horizontal line -Horizon Line- HL  Choose a point on it – View Point- VP  Link the corners of your sheet to the VP  All the lines are either parallel to the HL or converge on the VP

 Small Paper Start with your construction lines Draw the trees and the street like in the example Color it with colored pencils  Big Paper Start with your construction lines Draw a street of your imagination Add details, windows, doors, trees, people Color it with colored pencils

 Depth —feeling of space and distance in a picture  Horizon—imaginary place where the earth and sky seem to meet  Vanishing Point —imaginary spot in a picture at which all the lines in a painting seem to come together

 Utrillo’s mom, Marie Clementine “Suzanne” Valadon, was a model for impressionist painters  She became a famous painter in her own right  She is the dancer in the picture
