Mrs. Andrade’s 2 nd Grade Class Welcome Parents!

Welcome to 2 nd Grade!  The purpose of tonight is to provide information about our curriculum and our daily procedures. We have been busy assessing the students and helping them learn procedures and transition into 2 nd grade. Since we are only in the 2 nd week of school it is really difficult to discuss your child’s progress with you tonight. We will have our first parent/teacher conferences this October. Of course, if there are any concerns before then I will contact you. I also welcome you contacting me with concerns too.

My philosophy is that each child that enters my room is unique and learns in their own way. My job is to foster and support a learning environment where each child can learn and reach their fullest potential. I continually encourage all my students to do their best and to strive to reach their goals. I always encourage having high expectations for learning and becoming a life time learner. Everyone deserves to learn, be challenged, and enriched to reach their highest goals.

Goals  To give each child the academic tools he/she needs to progress to 3 rd grade.  To provide a supportive learning environment.  To have fun while we learn.  To make new friends and discover new interests.

Class Content  We will cover all the subjects and topics that our state believes are important for your child to learn during 2 nd grade.  We will make sure to meet all of your child’s needs and make sure he/she is working towards meeting his/her full potential.

Social Studies  Social Studies: We will be learning about many things this year. One really fun topic is colonial times and our field trip to Pioneer Village!

Math  Math: Students will be instructed using Engage NY. We will learn about all of our math facts, money, addition and subtraction (different levels of problem solving), measurement, fractions, multiplication, and so much more! We will all be challenged to work at our highest abilities.

Reading  Reading: Students will have many opportunities throughout the day to read. All students will be instructed at their reading level in small-guided reading groups. There will also be whole class reading using the adopted Reading Street curriculum. We will also have Read Aloud Time and Independent Reading. We will work towards improving our fluency and increasing our reading skills.

Science  Science: Science will include a unit on the life cycle of butterflies and mealworms. We will actually be able to watch a Painted Lady Butterfly hatch in our room and a mealworm into a Darkling beetle! We will also learn about the human body, weather, and states of matter. We will participate in experiments to help us discover the many new things about our world.

Class Rules Our class rules are simple. We concentrate on the 3 R’s. Ready to Learn Respect Responsibility * I will share with you our behavior plan and behavior log.

Homework The students will be bringing home a binder that will include homework, notes home, graded work, a behavior sheet, etc. Everything each student needs will be in this binder. Please ask your child for their binder nightly so that you can look through it. Also, please look over their nightly homework so that errors can be corrected.

Field Trips  We will be sending home information as it becomes available. As soon as we know which field trips we are scheduling, we will send home information. We always give plenty of notice so that you have an opportunity to plan to join us on our trips if possible.
