The When, the Where & the What In 1955, he received his PhD from Boston University. In 1954, he co-pastored Ebenezer Baptist church in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1964, in Alabama, he wrote “A Letter from A Birmingham Jail.”

He spoke at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. on August 28, In 1965, he led a voting rights March in Selma, Alabama. In 1968, someone shot him in Memphis, Tennessee.

He was a civil rights leader who met the King of Norway and was influenced by Howard Thurman. He was a husband and a father who traveled to India to meet Gandhi’s family. He was a pastor at Dexter Avenue Baptist church in Montgomery, Alabama. He worked with Roy Wilkins, Ralph Albernathy and A Philip Randolph.

When did Martin Luther King, Jr. become popular? In 1955, King started to become popular as his speeches, sermons and actions stirred a nation. In 1963, King delivered his “I Have a Dream Speech” which led to Congress Passing the Civil Rights Act in In 1963, TIME magazine named him Man of the Year.

In 1964, the world recognized his efforts for nonviolence awarding him the Nobel Prize. In 1986, Congress passed a law celebrating King’s birthday in January and in 1993 all 50 states observed the holiday.

How did he influence the world? He marched for voting rights. He marched for Civil Rights. He marched for Equality. He had a dream that all men would be treated equal.

What did Martin Luther King, Jr. do in his lifetime? In 1948, he graduated from Morehouse college. In 1955, he led the Montgomery bus boycott. In 1959, he visited India and studied civil disobedience. In 1963, he delivered his “I Have A Dream” speech. In 1964, he received the Nobel Peace Prize for nonviolence.

 Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.  I just want to do God’s will. And he has allowed me to go up to the mountain, and I have looked over, and I have seen…the Promised Land.  If a man is called to be a streetsweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music, or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the host of heaven and earth will pause to say, here lived a great streetsweeper who did his job well.

My Conclusion:  The world misses Martin Luther King Jr. He had the faith to rally a nation, the courage to dream big and the drive to march to the beat of a different drummer.
